This film is set in a typical California high school, and tells the story of Jake Taylor (Randy Wayne, who is definitely not hard on the eyes). Jake is at the top of the High School social ladder, captain of the basketball team, hot girlfriend, and all the “in crowd” friends.
The drama unfolds around the fact that Jake has written off his childhood best friend, Roger, due to pressure from his in crowd friends. During their senior year Roger finally collapses under the weight of four years of isolation and bullying. He chooses the only way out he believes is left to him and shows up one day on campus with a gun.
In a very poignant scene Jake and Roger come face to face after the first few shots are fired, but Jake is unable to dissuade Roger from his original plan of action. The events that follow rock Jake’s world. He begins to question everything. But most of all, he cant stop wondering if he could somehow have prevented the tragedy.
Jake’s questioning causes him to begin to see the world around him through different eyes. He begins to notice and reach out to geeks, losers, and loners, which causes him to cross the strict high school caste lines and risk losing his popularity.
In the course of Jake’s journey the film insightfully and accurately explores many issues facing teens today such as: bullying, teen sexuality, abortion, divorce, cutting, drug and alcohol abuse, and suicide. Although there are no “A list” actors in the cast, the stars in this film are all easy on the eyes and make up a believable high school setting.
